Guidestar farm performs regenerative agriculture. We practice multispecies rotational grazing with cattle, sheep, and layers. Currently we have 3 acres in elderberry's and 2 acres being added. We are doing trials integrating sheep grazing into our elderberry fields and in the future hope to integrate broilers that are daily moved down the row alleys in chicken tractors. About half our farm is forested. We have been working with a forester to improve their health through selective thinning. Removed tree material is used for heat, hot water production, and to grown mushrooms, in the future we hope to produce bio-char and a timber harvest. Suitable trees are used to grow Shiitake and lion's mane mushrooms in the traditional Japanese style with logs out in the woods fluctuating with the climate and seasons. We have been experimenting with several different tree polyculture plantings and have planted around 700 trees to provide food for people, livestock, wildlife, and the soil. We have a small, low density, hog operation. The hogs are a rare heritage breed (mulefoots) that require minimal inputs, are hardy in our climate, are slow growing, and are a traditional lard hog. The hogs are rotated between several large woodlots; They root, eat vegetation, and harvest tree nuts. None of our animals are vaccinated, we don't worm and we don't grain feed our ruminants. Our hogs and layers get a good quality non-GMO feed. We don't use any herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, or inorganic fertilizers in our food production systems.
